Life Balance 1.1.1 May 21, 1997 This version of Life Balance is compatible with the MessagePad 2000, and adds several new features requested by our customers. Please read this entire document, since it describes some differences from the instructions in the printed manual. Which version to install Life Balance now comes in two versions, one for Newton 1.x units, and one for Newton 2.x units. Use the Newton 1.x version if you have an older Newton or need to beam outline items to someone using an older Newton. All other users should install the Newton 2.x version, which is smaller and faster. There may be a delay the first time you run the new version of Life Balance while it updates your outline. After that, it should run much faster. Choosing an installer On the Macintosh, we've included the Newton Package Installer which works for all Newtons and all Macintoshes. On Windows, there are two different versions of the Newton Package Installer, depending on which version of the Newton operating system you are using. If you have a Newton 1.x system, then you can use the program NEWTINST.EXE directly from the floppy disk. If you have a Newton 2.x system, then you use the NPI2.EXE in the NPI2 folder. Check out the README.WRI file in that folder for details from Apple on how to use the installer for Newton 2.x. Some users have reported problems installing Life Balance from Windows under certain circumstances. Either the installation will fail halfway through, or the installation will appear to succeed, but an error will appear stating that the package may not be compatible with this Newton. In either case, following these guidelines usually solves the problem: ¥ Make sure that both the Newton Package Installer and the Newton are set to use a serial port speed of 9600. Higher speeds are not reliable. ¥ Make sure that you have the latest Newton system update installed on your Newton. The latest system updates can be found on the web at . ¥ Install to internal memory instead of a memory card, by making sure that the "Save new info and packages on this card" option in the Card application is not checked. On Newton 2.x units, you can move Life Balance to the card after it is successfully installed. The following filenames are used on Windows: LB111-1x.PKG Life Balance 1.1.1 for Newton 1.x LB111-2x.PKG Life Balance 1.1.1 for Newton 2.x LBH-11.PKG Life Balance Help 1.1 New features v The Outline contains a new button called Items. Under this button are commands to Expand All and Collapse All items in the outline. v In the Outline, the action (envelope) button contains a new command to Duplicate a section of the outline. v When viewing the details for an item, the new uItem: popup menu allows you to move directly to the item's parents and children. This is especially useful when adjusting priorities from within the To-do list. v A new button with the Llamagraphics Òdouble-LÓ logo allows you to iconify the program without closing it. You can drag the iconified button to any convenient location on the screen. Note that while Life Balance is iconified, it is still running and taking up memory. If you get errors in other software while Life Balance is iconified, close Life Balance instead of using the iconify feature. v The Move to card command has been replaced by the standard filing (folder) button, which provides support for multiple memory cards. (Newton 2.x version only) v Newton 2.x native routing provides additional mail/print/fax options, including Copy to Notes. (Newton 2.x version only) Changes v The Update command in the Outline is now under the Items button, and it now behaves identically to the Update button in the To-do list. v Beaming a section of the outline now generates a single item in the Outbox rather than multiple items. (Newton 2.x version only.) Beaming is not supported between the Newton 1.x and the Newton 2.x versions of Life Balance. If you need to beam Life Balance items between a Newton 1.x unit and a Newton 2.x unit, then you must run the Newton 1.x version of Life Balance on both units. v Progress indicators are now sensitive to the speed of the Newton. They may not appear at all if the operation will take less than a second. v Many operations are faster on Newton 2.x units. Closing the application is noticably faster. Bug fixes v Several operations involving the built-in Dates application that could cause crashes have been fixed. If you still have trouble posting items to Dates after installing this update, contact us or check our web site for the Dates Checker utility, which can identify and repair corrupted data in the Dates application. (This is more likely to occur if you have restored data from a Newton 1.x unit.) v Dates that recur every month at the end of the month will now be scheduled for every month, not just in months with sufficient numbers of days. For instance, if you schedule an item on January 31 that repeats every month, it will now correctly appear on February 28 and April 30. v Beaming now works correctly on MessagePad 130 units. v A bug in version 1.1 that prevented the 1.x version from running on MessagePad 100 units has been fixed.
